Water Quality Update

Putting Students First is our number one priority! At the end of December 2016, the School District finished testing every single water source in its schools and office buildings for any evidence of lead in its domestic water. All testing was completed in compliance with state regulations, and a state-certified laboratory reviewed and verified all results.

Out of a review of approximately 1,400 water sources across all district buildings, two sources used for drinking came back with elevated levels: one at ECDC and one at Dudley. At some schools, sinks used for washing hands, or sinks used in science labs, showed elevated levels, but skin exposure to lead in water is not considered dangerous. As a precaution, all sink outlets used for washing hands have been posted with signage indicating that they should not be used for drinking.

Lead can enter people's bodies in the food they eat, the air they breathe, and the water they drink. Lead cannot enter people’s bodies through skin contact, such as washing hands. Too much lead in the human body can cause serious damage to the brain, nervous system, and red blood cells. Pregnant women and young children are at the greatest risk even when their exposure is to low levels of lead for short periods of time. Young children between the ages of six months and six years are more likely to suffer health problems as a result of lead exposure.

The School District’s full results are available here or they can be reviewed at the school district administration building located at 1033 Cambridge Street. For questions specific to our School District, call the Solutions Center at 856-966-2507. You can also learn more about this general topic by calling the Safe Drinking Water Hotline toll-free at 800-426-4791, or by reviewing the New Jersey Department of Health website

The District continues to be fully committed to the issue of lead awareness and it will continue to provide bottled drinking water in all District schools and office buildings. There is no higher priority than the health and well-being of our students.
