Katrina McCombs

Dear colleagues, partners, and families,

It is with great hope and humility that I address you as the newly appointed Acting Superintendent of the Camden City School District. My heart has belonged to the teachers and students of this District since I first stepped into Mickle Elementary School as a shy little girl however many years ago. To now have the privilege of leading our City’s schools along the path to dramatically raising student achievement is the honor of a lifetime.

As your Acting Superintendent, I will work with teachers, families, and the community to put supports and practices in place that help our schools close the achievement gap and allow our students to realize their potential. I will work with our Mayor, elected officials, and community leaders to make sure our children and families get their fair share of resources, both in schools and in our communities.

It is my responsibility to make sure our District schools are offering our students excellent instruction in a safe, supportive environment. This is only possible by working in partnership with the excellent educators who’ve dedicated their lives to helping our children thrive academically and socially. As a former kindergarten teacher, literacy coach, principal, and early childhood director, I have witnessed the many obstacles our children must overcome before they can focus on their education. My team and I will work hard to address these barriers, and give all students in our City the support they need to succeed in the classroom, college, or a meaningful career.

In the coming months, the Commissioner of Education is expected to launch a national search for a permanent State Superintendent of the Camden City School District. I fully intend to be part of that process, and will pursue every opportunity to continue serving Camden’s students as your Superintendent of Schools.

Over the summer I want to hear from you. My top priority will be to meet with families, staff, community leaders, and students from across the City to hear what is working, and what we need to do better. We will only be successful for our students if we work together to provide a high quality public education. I look forward to working with you to help every Camden child succeed in school and beyond.

Sincerely,

Katrina T. McCombs, MA, MAEd
